Retreats are an expression of our natural life rhythm. Just as we move in and out of the cycles of sleep and wakefulness, we also move through broader cycles of activity and rest. There is a place for going toward or being engaged in the world’s activity and there is a time for collecting ourselves. In times of rest, reflection and stillness we can refocus our energy. We can reconnect with our deepest intentions, our true nature and the source of our life energy. To be in retreat expresses our deep wisdom and ritualizes the activity of a true human.
There is growing scientific evidence that supports what both meditators and musicians have always known, that the body and the world are healed through mindful contemplation and music. Researchers are discovering that at a cellular level, all beings seek harmony and sympathetic vibration. And, there are things that we can do to encourage that kind of fundamental healing.
Based on my extensive background in world drumming traditions and Zen meditation, my retreats are a unique experience combining silent contemplation and the expressive activity of drumming. In both practices the heart/mind that is constant and still can be seen. Our ordinary ways of figuring, comparing and worrying can drop off and we reconnect with our inherent healing power. Complemented with community meals, discussion and a restful environment these retreats are a rare and special treat.
